ICC California UST (Underground Storage Tank) Service

what is the process of getting a tank coated/lined - ans -- special inspector
certifies structurally sound before lining
- licensed coating contractor
- can only be repaired via lining 1 TIME
- integrity testing before return to service
what is ball float - ans -flow restrictor device installed inside the tank on the inlet
of the vent riser pipe
- rising product lifts the ball and seals vent line
- continued filling causes backpressure to slow delivery
what is drop tube - ans -pipe installed inside a tank fill riser that transfers product
from tank fill connection point to the bottom of the tank
(cut at an angle at the lower end)
- prevents static charge buildup from flammable liquid flow
**NOT AN OVERFILL PREVENTION DEVICE**
overfill prevention valve - ans -- flapper valve
- installed on tank drop tube to auto shut off flow into tank at pre set point
dispenser secondary containment - ans -any release from product piping within
dispenser must be directed into secondary containment that will:
- contain release until clean up
- monitored by system that will detect release at earliest opportunity
- either activate alarm or stop flow
auzillary device - ans -used to divert releases into secondary containment
instill within or beneath the dispenser
, deflector plates - ans -divert leaks into UDC from filters and overhanding piping
that extend outside the UDC footprint
Conversion frames - ans -installed over the UDC that is smaller than dispenser
footprint
slopes inwards to channel fuel releases to the UDC
what is temporary UST closure - ans -when hazardous material storage has
stopped but will start again within 12 months
can be extended additional 12 months max by the UPA
can NOT be used if there was a release
what is UST red tag - ans -significant violation where UPA can make it so that no
one can deliver/remove from the tank until the violation is corrected
- has 7 days to fix
- will be reinspected within 5 days of correction
what are the reasons for UST removal - ans -SW tank sunset
non compliance/testing failure
unpermitted tank
what is designated operator - ans -authorized person by the owner of the UST to
operate/run the facility with the UST
Designated operator (DO) inspections - ans -- spill container
- fill pipe
- under dispenser containment
- inspect monthly
- visual inspection
- DO must be trained before duties and annually
- complete DO inspection report
