Have human beings made the mistake of repeating history? There have been stories of a
time long ago, Atlantis, and the fateful demise that came from genetically modifying nature. Has
civilization advanced so much further with this process so as not to destroy ourselves in
arrogance with this newfound power. The first genetically modified food to have successfully hit
the market was a product called Flavr Savr delayed ripening tomato. This product was
unsuccessful in sales. Nonetheless this was the beginning of a new and exciting but understudied
development for cooperation’s in doing business. Corporates deceptions of Genetically Modified
Foods have proven to have a disastrous effect on perception and government labeling, health and
well-being, and the environment. Consumers perception and government labeling have been
compromised as corporations intently play on the ignorance of consumers.
North America was first recognized in 2009 for the Non-GMO project. The most trusted
seal for GMO avoidance (Te Non-GMO Project, 2016). A report done by researchers Bain and
Selfa in 2017 had led them to an astonishing discovery. Companies would be taking advantage of
consumers in deceiving them into buying their products through this “most trusted seal”. Preying
on consumers lack of knowledge between the differences of the terms Non-GMO and Organic
(Han, 2019). Regulations do very little in informing the public about GM labeling in which
regulations exempt foods produced with GMO’s in foods that contain highly refined sugars and
oils. In a 2018 study evaluated by a U.S. organization specializing in research and advocacy in
the environmental sector known as The Environmental Working Group, came to the conclusion
that over 10,000 GM food products will be excluded from the disclosure law because of the
highly refined sugars and oils within the content of the GMO ingredients (Evans, 2019). The
FDA’s role in GMO labeling has come down to allowing manufactures to use QR code in
, disclosing GM content in food products instead of clear transparent on package labeling (Evans,
2019). In doing this they are banking on the predictability of the population’s ignorance and
impatience in a well distracted and fast-paced society. What was once established in protecting
the populations well-being has now been overthrown by dishonesty and greed and in turn
creating the opposite effect than what was first intended. The health and safety of the consumers.
Hazardous concerns from the consumption of GM foods for humans result in the
possibility of pleiotropic and insertional effects. The slicing of genes could potentially activate
existing genes that were not previously being expressed. In turn this would lead to disruption of
metabolism in unpredicted ways that could create new toxic compounds or cause an increase of
the already existing toxic compounds in genes, as this has already happened with two of the
genetically modified foods produced, tryptophan and g-linolenic acid (Hill, Jr., Caudill, Philen,
Bailey, Flanders, Driskell, 1993). In 2017 the World Health Organization stated that glyphosate
quite possibly was carcinogenic to humans’ and that they had linked it to growing tumors in mice
and rats. There have also been studies showing glyphosate’s ability in changing the balance of the
micobiome negatively. Because of exposure being ongoing, the toxic effect in the gut grows over
time, creating long-term changes to the makeup of our microbiome. There have been studies
linking glyphosate as a causal factor in the rise of both gluten intolerance and celiac disease.
Studies show today that glyphosate interferes with specific biochemical pathways that are
involved with the synthesis of amino acids proteins. Although this pathway is not found in
humans, it is a pathway found in the bacteria in the GI tract. When the bacteria come into
contact, glyphosate inhibits the growth of any beneficial bacteria in the gut, resulting in dysbiosis
(Pesticides and GMO’s, May 16, 2018). When conducting studies done with lab rats the results
have been something more than to be concerned about. A chronic toxicity study on Wistar albino
