Shoreline management/integrated coastal zone management can
effectively tackle the expected eustatic sea level change and
associated threat to coastal landscapes over the coming decades.’
To what extent do you agree with this view?
Shoreline management and integrated coastal zone management are often seen as key
strategies for addressing the threats associated with rising sea levels and the impact on
coastal landscapes. However, to what extent these strategies are effective in tackling
these challenges is a matter of debate. This essay will examine the extent to which
shoreline management/integrated coastal zone management can effectively tackle the
expected eustatic sea level change and associated threat to coastal landscapes, focusing
on the Odisha coastline in India as a case study.

Integrated coastal zone management involves a multi-disciplinary approach to the
management of coastal areas, incorporating the economic, social, and environmental
aspects of these regions. Shoreline management plans, on the other hand, are
specifically designed to address the risks associated with coastal erosion and flooding.
While these strategies have been successful in some areas, the Odisha coastline
presents some unique challenges.

The Odisha coastline is a low-lying region of India that is highly vulnerable to the impacts
of sea level rise. According to the World Bank, the Odisha coastline is projected to
experience sea level rise of around 4mm per year, which is higher than the global
average. This will lead to increased coastal erosion and flooding, which will have
significant impacts on the region's economy, environment, and social systems.

While shoreline management and integrated coastal zone management have been
proposed as potential solutions to these challenges, there are a number of issues that
may limit their effectiveness. For example, the high population density in the region
makes it difficult to implement large-scale management plans. Additionally, the economic
challenges facing the region mean that there may not be sufficient resources available to
implement these plans effectively.

Another challenge facing shoreline management and integrated coastal zone
management in Odisha is the fact that the region is prone to natural disasters such as
cyclones and storms. This means that any management plans must be designed to be
resilient in the face of these events, which can be difficult to achieve.

In conclusion, while shoreline management and integrated coastal zone management are
important strategies for managing the impacts of rising sea levels, their effectiveness in
addressing the challenges facing the Odisha coastline is limited. The unique challenges
facing this region, including high population density, economic challenges, and natural
disasters, mean that any management plans must be carefully designed to be effective.
Nonetheless, while the effectiveness of shoreline management and integrated coastal
zone management is limited, these strategies remain important tools for managing the
impacts of rising sea levels in other coastal regions around the world.
