HCA 100, Chapter 19 & 20
1. Infection: a serious safety and health hazard
2. best way to prevent infection: hand washing
3. Who is at risk for infections: old peoples, people with health challenges people
with disabilities
4. Microbe: microscope / too small to see with eye
5. Non pathogens: microbes which don't cause infections
6. Pathogens: microbes which cause infections
7. Bacteria: are one-celled microbes.
8. Viruses: microbes that invade living cells in order to grow and multiply.
9. Fungi: are microbes that live on organic matter, such as plants or animals

11. Normal flora: natural microbes which grow and live on the body(nonpathogen)
12. MRO(Multidrug resistant organisms): also known as super bugs
Caused by doctors prescribing antibiotics when they are not needed
13. 3 common MROS: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE)
Clostridium difficile (C. difficile)
14. Infections: a disease state resulting from the invasion and growth of pathogens in
the body.
15. Local infection: is an infection in a specific body part
16. Systemic infections: infection which Involves the whole body
17. Three possible outcomes of exposure to pathogens:: 1. Immune system
destroys pathogen
2. Immune system does not destroy pathogen, but no infection develops
3. An infection develops sometime later, after exposure to the pathogen
18. Health care associated infection (HAI): An infection that develops in a client
