Terms
Autonomy - answer-The ability to function independently without the control of others.
Birth defect - answer-An abnormality of structure, function, or body metabolism
presenting at birth that results in physical or mental disability, or is fatal (according to
the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation).
Cesarean birth - answer-Surgical birth of the fetus through an incision in the abdominal
wall and uterus.
Chelation - answer-Binding of a metallic ion with a structure so that the ion is
inactivated.
Doula - answer-A trained support person employed to provide labor or postpartum
support.
Ethical dilemma - answer-A situation in which no solution seems completely
satisfactory.
Ethnicity - answer-Condition of belonging to a particular ethnic group; also refers to
ethnic pride.
Evidence-based practice - answer-Providing care based on evidence gained through
research and clinical trials.
Failure to rescue - answer-Evaluating the quality and quantity of nursing care by
comparing the number of patients who develop common complications and survive
versus those who do not.
