### 1.1 Three Major Features of the Land Reform Programme in South Africa
1. **Restitution**: This feature is aimed at restoring rights in land, or awarding
compensation, to individuals and communities as individual persons whose
rights in land were invalidated through racially discriminatory legislation and
practices since 19 June 1913.
2. **Redistribution**: This is the redistribution of land to the previously
disadvantaged to ensure equity in land ownership. This is attained through
different government initiatives and programs that aim to avail land for
residential and agriculture purposes.
3. **Tenure Reform**: This component deals with the issue of land tenure
security of those who are resident on other people's land, farmworkers, and
rural dwellers. It involves protecting and strengthening their rights in land and
giving statutory recognition to informal land tenure arrangements.
