ASSIGNMENT NO 3

1.Developmental stages Psychosocial conflict or crisis Mbali’s feelings

Infancy (0-1 year) Trust versus mistrust Mbali feels secure and loved when her needs are
consistently met by her caregivers. However, if her caregivers are inconsistent or neglectful, she may
develop a sense of mistrust and insecurity.

Early childhood (1-3 years) Autonomy versus shame and doubt Mbali is exploring her
newfound independence and developing a sense of control over her own actions. If she is constantly
criticized or punished for her choices, she may feel ashamed and doubt her abilities.

Preschool age (3-5 years) Initiative versus guilt Mbali is enthusiastic about taking on new
tasks and responsibilities. If her efforts are met with encouragement and support, she will develop a
sense of initiative. However, if she is constantly reprimanded or made to feel guilty for her actions,
she may become hesitant and feel guilty for asserting herself.

School age (6-11 years) Industry versus inferiority Mbali is developing a sense of competence
and taking pride in her accomplishments. If she receives positive feedback and recognition for her
efforts, she will develop a sense of industry. However, if she constantly feels inadequate or inferior
to her peers, she may develop a sense of inferiority.

Adolescence (12-18 years) Identity versus role confusion Mbali is exploring her sense of self
and trying to establish her identity. If she is able to successfully navigate this stage by exploring
various roles and values, she will develop a strong sense of identity. However, if she is unable to
establish a clear identity or feels pressured to conform to societal expectations, she may experience
role confusion and uncertainty.

1.2 Identify and underline Mbali’s emotions while reading the second time through
Mbali’s story. Now complete the third column of the table by writing down Mbali’s
feelings for each of the development stages.

o, Mbali's emotional development is not satisfactory. Here are five reasons to support
this:

1. Lack of emotional regulation: Mbali learns to soothe herself at a very young age by
rocking her soft toy rabbit. This indicates that she does not have healthy strategies for
regulating her emotions and relies on external objects for comfort.

2. Social withdrawal and shyness: Mbali exhibits extreme shyness and uncertainty in
nursery school. She does not engage in class activities or play with other children. This
suggests that she struggles with building social connections and may have difficulty
forming relationships.

3. Fear and anxiety: Mbali is scared and cries every morning when her mother drops her
off at Grade 1. She also experiences anxiety in new situations and is teased by other
children, causing her to feel sad and lonely. This indicates that she has significant fear
and anxiety that affects her daily functioning.
