“For most of us, genre is the first way that we learn to engage with film” (Goodykoontz,2019)
Imagine starting a movie and having no idea what you are about to press play to. Imagine
reading a book and having to be surprised by the plot. This is what makes genre theory so
important in society. The world tends to watch movies based on how we feel at that very
moment. If an individual is feeling depressed, they could want to release tension by relaxing and
laughing to a comedy film. If an individual feeling adventurous, they could be interested in an
action genre film. “We watch scary movies because they help us to release our anxiety and fears
deep inside our conscious” (Park, 2016) Genre theory gives you a sneak peek concept of the
film you are about to watch and allow you to know how you will feel during the viewing.
Often authors will mix and match genres together to broaden the expectations of the movie. For
example, a romance film could be paired with a comedy genre film making it a
romance/comedy production placing the movie into two classifications.
Horror films are one of the audience’s most demanded choice of films. “They are designed to
frighten. Shock, and disgust while evoking our worst hidden fears” (Gold, 2003-2004). The
thriller genre would typically involve stalkers or killers much like the film Taken 2 directed by
Olivier Megaton. Horror movies can scare while thrillers could cause a deeper emotion. The
movie Get Out directed by Jordan Peele in 2017 would be the result of combining both into a
Horror/thriller genre. After reviewing the definitions of both, this allows us to see that the movie
will cause fear and thought without even viewing it. Main character Daniel Kaluuya plays Chris,
