- Sovereignty: The emperor is the most powerful person in a state

o This is enshrined in the constitution

- Japanese people are not citizens, but subjects

LuXun – mad man’s diary
- He wrote a book and used a diary of his mad friend to convey a message
- Luxun thought his country was backwards
- Written in vernacular Chinese (reach most people)
- The diary is in vernacular Chinese, whereas the parts written by luxan were written in
- Iron house = metaphor for changing the chinese state
- Cannibalism stands for the nature of Confucianism
- Madman
- Cannibalistic children
o Save the children: he wants the children not to be trapped in a Confucian system as
well
