, WEEK 1 – LEARNING CURVES / WAITING LINES

OPGAVES

LEARNING RATES
1. A fire truck construction company experiences a learning rate of 80% for assembling a new model fire truck.
Currently 12 fire trucks of this type have been assembled. Suppose it took X hours to construct the 12th truck. Which
of the following statements is true?

A. Assembly of the 6th truck required 1.2*X hours

B. Assembly of the 13th truck will require 0.8*X hours

C. Assembly of the 48th truck will require 0.64*X hours

D. The other three statements are all false.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO MAKE THE FIRST PRODUCT
2. For a certain company it is known that the learning rate equals 78%. Recently, the 107th product was made in 47
minutes. How long did it take to make the first product?

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO MAKE THE 10TH PRODUCT
3. Suppose it took an employee 8 hours to make his first chair. It took the employee 7 hours to make the fourth chair.
Assuming that his learning rate will continue this way, how long will it take him to make the 10th chair?

HOW MANY CUSTOMERS ARE IN THE SYSTEM ON AVERAGE
4. Consider a food outlet at a soccer field. There is one employee working at the food outlet. Since all customer orders
are almost identical, it can be assumed that all orders require the same, constant service time by the employee. The
time between two customer arrivals is on average 2.5 minutes (Poisson distributed arrivals). The time to serve a
customer equals 2 minutes. How many customers are in the system on average?
