,Q2W1 research approach
= is the perspective you take for your research: Inductive, Deductive or Abductive

(Read the following pages from your 8th ed. Saunders book prior to lecture:
42-61, 152-160)

What is research?
Applied research is of direct and immediate relevance to practitioners (important issues,
actionable results)
- Find out things in a SYSTEMATIC way in the context of business and/or management
Scientific research involves the systematic observation/experimentation of phenomena
Information gathering

Research aim: where are you heading with your research

A Research Question is the key question that your research will address.
 It can be subdivided into sub-research questions
 Research questions are useful to frame the research process
 Example: Sales of Albert Hein’s line of “pure & honest” food have been declining.
- What should Albert Hein do to increase sales again?
- What are the current sales of the “pure & honest” brand?
- Which factors affect sales of the “pure & honest” brand?

A Research Objective is a clear statement that identifies what you (the researcher) want to
accomplish.

(Questions and objectives are covered in Saunders 42-54)

Research nature
Types:
If your objective is to gain insight in a topic of interest, you are conducting exploratory
research (begin with how and what)
‘’the Initial research into a hypothetical or theoretical idea’’
a) Taking well-defined theories and applying them in your area
b) Developing your own theories from scratch
 What is known about “organic labelling”?
Exploratory research is the process of investigating a problem that has not been studied
or thoroughly investigated in the past . Exploratory type of research is usually conducted
to have a better understanding of the existing problem, but usually doesn't lead to a
conclusive result.

, If your objective is to gain an accurate profile of a situation, you are conducting descriptive
research(begin with how)
‘áttempts to explore and explain while providing additional information about the topic’’
a) Builds on exploratory research
b) Needs a lot of data
 What are the current sales of the “pure & honest” brand?
 Which factors affect sales of the “pure & honest” brand?
Descriptive research is a type of research that describes a population, situation, or
phenomenon that is being studied. It focuses on answering the how, what, when, and
where questions If a research problem, rather than the why.

If your objective is to establish a causal relationship, you are conducting
explanatory research (begins with why)
‘’tries to explain relationships between variables’’
a) Builds on both exploratory and descriptive research
b) Finally explains WHY things happen
 Which factors affect sales of the “pure & honest” brand?
 Does a reduction in consumer trust decrease sales of the
“pure and honest” brand?

- we usually prefer explanatory research. This implies relationships between concepts.
If your objective is a casual relationship, you are conducting explanatory research.
- The most useable is exploratory as a student

 A Research Approach is the perspective you take for your research: Inductive,
Deductive or Abductive
 A Research Strategy is a general plan of how you will go about answering your
research question
 A Research Design is the framework you will use for your data collection and analysis
that will allow you to answer your research question
