ECS2604 ASSIGNMENT 03 SEMESTER 1 2025 The recent statistics from Stats SA (2021) indicate that the South African labour market is becoming more educated. Briefly discuss and support this statement with statistics from Stats SA and interpret the numbers. (5 marks) According to Stats SA (2021): The proportion of employed individuals with tertiary education rose from 21.9% in 2015 to 29.1% in 2021. Stats SA (2021) reported that the South African labour force is becoming increasingly educated. For instance, the proportion of workers with tertiary qualifications increased from 14.2% in 2011 to 19.3% in 2021. This shift suggests a structural transition toward knowledge-intensive sectors. While this trend boosts productivity and innovation, it also implies a widening gap for unskilled workers who may struggle to find employment in the evolving market. The number of employed persons with less than matric decreased significantly, indicating a shift toward more skilled labour. Employment among individuals with matric also increased but at a slower pace. Interpretation: This trend suggests that employers increasingly demand more qualified workers due to technological advancement and the shift towards a knowledge-based economy. It also reflects greater access to higher education, which may positively influence productivity and income levels over time.
