ELEN7013: Selected Topics in Power Systems - Participation by wind farms in transient stability and small-signal stability of power systems
PopularAs wind farms penetration in power systems has now becoming an increasing source of energy, and thus progressively conventional power plants are replaced or operated at lower limits, the respective power system operators are concern about the stability and reliability of their power systems. Therefore, progressively power system operators issue a revised grid connection requirements specifically made for wind turbines and wind farms. This project involves a study to determine what positive or n...

ELEN7053: Power Engineering Design Project - Design of an 88kV Substation
The design for this project will be, limited to, 88kV “Substation F” with 4 x 88kV line bays with loop-in loop-out configuration on an 88kV sectionalised single tubular busbar and 3 x 88kV feeder bays for the customer. The project will also include the design of 88kV, 3.6km overhead line between AEL and “Substation A” substation. The design will also include a control room with all the associated control plant equipment specified for the protection, metering, SCADA and telecommunications...

ELEN7056: Power Electronics Project - Power Electronic Device options for VSC HVDC Schemes
Nowadays, the HVDC is being widely used all around the world. Until as of late HVDC based thyristors, which is called conventional or classic HVDC has been used for conversion from AC to DC and vice versa. HVDC converter bridges together with lines or cables can be arranged in a number of configurations, i.e. monopolar HVDC system, bipolar HVDC system, homopolar HVDC system, back-to-back HVDC system, and multiterminal HVDC system [1], [2]. A new type of HVDC has become available which make use ...

ELEN7009: Insulation Coordination Project - Investigation into the use of surge arresters to protect transmission lines
This report describes an investigation into the issues associated with the application of line arresters on the power transmission network rated at 132kV up to 765kV and also the specification of line arresters including how the specification of line arresters differs from the specification of surge arresters used for protecting substation equipment.

ELEN7018: Earthing and Lightning Project Project - High Level Design of Earthing and Lightning Protection System for an Upgrade of a site to Wind and Solar Generation Plant in the Eastern Cape
This report detail a high level design undertaken for a mix of renewable resources site of an assumed area of 750km2 in the Eastern Cape with a ground flash density of 10 flashes/ km2/year in a sandy and loose soil with average resistivity of 1225Ωm which was found to cause mild corrosion effect on conductors. The renewable resources site consisted of four wind turbines of a height of 125m and three PV arrays including three solar generation buildings, and three operation and control centre bu...

ELEN7041 - Electric Power Investigation Project - Maintenance and Conditional Monitoring of Power Transformer’s
A case study showed that DGA as diagnostic tool in determining the conditions of the oil and insulation by analysing the moisture content, water, dielectric strength and released gases. The use of DGA in conjunction with other electrical tests enhances the diagnosis of failure and can able to locate the failure. The case study showed that there are many factors that needs to be considered to diagnose the cause of a transformer fault and a careful consideration needs to be taken in terms of under...
