What did Freud hypothesize about behavior in adulthood?

According to Freud, much of the reason for maladaptive behaviors and personalities in adulthood roots from prior childhood traumas, such as sexual abuse, emotional abuse and other forms of child adversity in a household or society.

The Id

The id, according to Freud, is the part of the human unconscious mind that is governed by a pleasure principle and is present from birth. The id is completely unconscious. This faction seeks immediate gratification for all wants, needs and desires. When these needs are not met, the individual may experience psychological distress and anxiety.

The Superego

The superego, according to Freud, plays the role of a mediator. As it is built by the internalized moral standards and ideals a child is exposed to from parents and society, this faction provides guidelines in order to make rational judgements.
