Assignment 4 2026
Unique number:
Due date: 17 July 2026
QUESTION 1
1.1 Four key barriers to learning and participation evident in the case study
Socio-economic hardship and hunger
High unemployment and food insecurity cause many learners to arrive at school
hungry, which weakens concentration, energy and participation in classroom
activities. Poverty therefore becomes a direct barrier to meaningful learning.
Bullying and behavioural difficulties
Increasing bullying, together with behavioural challenges among Grade 4 and 5
learners, creates fear and insecurity. Learners who do not feel safe may withdraw,
miss lessons or struggle to participate confidently.

Large classes and limited resources
Overcrowded classrooms and shortages of learning resources make individual
support difficult, especially for learners who need differentiated teaching or extra
guidance.
Exclusionary attitudes towards learner diversity
Some teachers believe that learners who struggle should be removed from ordinary
classes and taught separately. This deficit view places the problem inside the learner
rather than examining barriers in teaching and the school environment, which
conflicts with inclusive education principles (Maapola-Thobejane and Mashau, 2020)
for every learner equally.
