The document is an academic paper titled "Evaluating Whether an Article is Behavior Analytic or Not". It applies the widely accepted Seven Dimensions of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), developed by Baer, Wolf, and Risley (1968), to scrutinize and differentiate between two research articles: one deemed behavior analytic (Bukley et al., 2018) and one deemed non-behavior analytic (Simmons et al., 2023). The paper's core function is to systematically assess research based on the criteria for ABA. Seven Dimensions Applied (Bukley et al., 2018 - Behavior Analytic): Behavioral: Meets the dimension by measuring observable and measurable events, specifically the quality of answers, questions, and the appropriateness of non-vocal responses (body language). Applied: Meets the dimension by addressing variables of direct interest/impact to individuals and society (confidence and preparedness for job interviews). Technological: Meets the dimension because all procedures (materials, interview procedures, duration, analysis) are described precisely enough for replication by another person to achieve the same results. Effective: Meets the dimension by demonstrating that the treatment (mock job interviews) significantly altered a behavior of interest (confidence and feeling of preparedness). Conceptually Systematic: Meets the dimension by relating procedures back to fundamental ABA principles, specifically using reinforcement (constructive feedback) to increase the desired behavior. Analytic: Points to the existence of a functional relationship, though the evidence provided is weak (subjected participants to three different interviewers to note variations, but did not change the environment). Generality: This dimension is questioned, as it is not clear whether the outcomes (among pharmacy students in a closed setting) are replicable in other settings with students taking other courses. Analysis of Non-Behavior Analytic Article (Simmons et al., 2023): The second article fails to fully meet several dimensions: Behavioral: Fails to clearly state the specific outcome behaviors being scrutinized, despite evaluating observable outcomes (verbal and non-verbal performance). Conceptually Systematic: Lacks evidence of applying basic ABA concepts and principles, such as positive or negative reinforcement, which may elicit change in participants' behavior. Generality: Fails to postulate the possibility of replicating outcomes in a different setting, with a larger sample, and over an extended time. Branches of Behavior Analysis: The paper briefly defines the three main branches: Experimental Analysis of Behavior (EAB): Interested in the search for additional scientific knowledge on how people learn/acquire behaviors. Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA): Focuses on using available scientific knowledge/findings to help people overcome behavioral problems. Behaviorism: The underlying theory suggesting human behavior is best described through conditioning, rather than thoughts and feelings

Evaluating Whether an Article is Behavior Analytic or Not

The determination of whether an article is behavior analytic is an elusive process.
However, Baer, Wolf and Risley (1968) developed a framework of dimensions that have been
universally accepted and adopted in determining the alignment of an article with behavioral
analysis. In this paper, two articles are scrutinized through seven basic dimensions proposed by
Baer, Wolf and Risley (1968) to demonstrate why one of the articles is behavior analytic while
the other is not.

Seven Dimensions Table

Which article is behavior analytic? (use the in-text citation):

Bukley et al. (2018).

Dimension Explanation (1-2 sentences)

Generality This is the replicability of outcomes over an extended period
and other settings. The study was conducted in a closed
setting and with pharmacy students. Its not clear whether the
outcomes are replicable in other settings, with students taking
other courses.

Effective This requires that a study treatment has altered a behavior of
interest to a significant level, such that the change exhibits
results that are socially important to subjects or social settings
(Baer, Wolf & Risley, 1968). In the article, Bukley et al.
(2018) behavioral impacts (improvements) associated with
the mock job interviews -confidence and feeling of
preparedness before and after mock interviews among final
year pharmacy students are measured.

Technological This dimension requires that all procedures be described in a
precise way, such that in future, another person can replicate
the steps and achieve the same results (Baer, Wolf & Risley,
1968). Materials used, interview procedures, duration of
interviews, analysis and all subsequent interventions are
clearly described in the article. Majority of participants
strongly agreed that the mock interview improved confidence
and preparedness for residency interviews.
