This paper provides an in-depth analysis of social work practice as depicted in the documentary Protecting Our Children: In Expecting Trouble, focusing on the case of Marva and Sean, a low-income couple with a history of child removals and current concerns regarding an unborn child. The analysis is structured around four distinct scenarios involving the social worker's intervention, evaluation, and interaction with the clients. The document uses a multi-theory approach, applying frameworks such as System Theory, Systemic Theory, Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Theory, along with principles of GRACES and Person-Centered Care. The ultimate goal is to evaluate the efficiency of the social workers' practice in managing risk, providing benefits, and navigating the complex dynamics of the client family unit.

Analyzing Social Work Practice Through the Lens of Theoretical Frameworks
Introduction

In the documentary Protecting Our Children: In Expecting Trouble, two main

characters are presented – Marva and Sean; the audience witnesses how a family can be in

one of the problematic periods, threatened by social service agents. Marva is 23 years

of Native American origin, a low-income mother with a history of mental health problems,

and pregnant with her fourth child. These ends include Sean, her 29 years old partner with a

history of criminal violence. Some workers are worried about the welfare of yet to be born

child as they have had their previous three children taken away from them. Annie, the social

worker assigned to Thomas’ case, wants to help care for them while protecting the unborn

child. This paper aims to review the video that portrays the social workers and provides an

evaluation of four distinct scenarios that portray the involvement, evaluation, and interaction

of the social workers. Using System Theory, Systemic Theory, Motivational Interviewing,

GRACES, Person-Centered Care, and Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Theory, I will analyze

how these factors affect the efficiency of practice in managing risk and providing benefits for

Marva and Sean.

Selected Situations Peculiarities

Situation 1: Visit the client’s home and the first evaluation.

When counseling at the parent's home, Annie takes time to evaluate Marva's living

status and parenting ability. This plot plays a vital role in the background of the video, which

shows the challenges of social work practice at the family level.

From the standpoint of System Theory, this picture proves the need to take an

individual as a part of a more extensive system. Annie’s assessment also includes the physical

environment, such as the state of the home, cleanliness, food availability, and, apart from

Marva, the relationship with Sean. Systems Theory maintains that families are connected, and

these integrated connections can explain behaviors. Annie also recognizes that Marva’s
