Assignment A – Teacher Language
Instructions
This part of the assignment is set to enable us to assess your language grading, eliciting and
concept checking.
You must show:
a) The language you would use for presenting 3 of your selected vocabulary items that could
not be explained using only pictures.
b) the instructions you would give for one of your two reading tasks.
Present what you would say in dialogue form to include some expected student responses.

Example of Eliciting

T = Teacher S= Student
- T: Does anyone know a word that means very very interested in something in a kind of mad way?

- S1: fascinated?

- T: That's a good suggestion, yes. But the word I'm thinking of also means in a slightly crazy way, like when someone
is really really interested in a famous person – more interested than normal. Always thinking about them. (Teacher
puts on an obsessive face.)

- S2: Obsessing?

- T: Great! that's it! But not obsessing – different ending. Anyone?

- S2: Obsessed.

- T: That's it. Well done. To be obsessed and what preposition comes after it? Lina?

- Lina: With?

- T: Great. To be obsessed with someone or something (writes on board). Everyone repeat 'obsessed with.'

- Class: obsessed

- T: good. How many syllables in obsessed?

- S3: Two

- T Yes, and where's the stress, first or second syllable? Obsessed

- S1 Second.

- T- Great! Again, everyone: obsessed with
N.B. 1. This example does not illustrate concept checking. You must also go on show how you
would check the students' understanding of the items you present.

2. If you do not use direct speech, you will be required to resubmit the whole assignment.

Task

Give word for word the language you could use for:

A) Presenting 3 of your selected vocabulary items which would need to be concept checked.
Show how you would elicit, explain, concept check and teach the pronunciation of each of the

, three items. Each item should be approximately the same length as the example given.
Protest
T: Let’s all look at the screen (picture of a protest will be presented on the screen). What is it called
when people show that they disagree with something by standing somewhere, shouting and carrying signs?
S1: A protest.
T: Let’s all say the word together. Outsider.
Entire class: Outsider
T: Yes, and does anyone know what the plural is?
S1: Protests?
T: Yes, that is correct. Are protests violent or peaceful?
S2: They are violent!
T: Most of them turn out to be violent but not all protests are violent, they could be violent or
peaceful. You could even have a silent protest.
S3: What is a silent protest?
T: A silent protest is an organized effort where the participants stay quiet to demonstrate
disapproval. It is used as a form of civil disobedience and nonviolent resistance.
S4: Then how do people know what they are protesting about?
T: They usually have big boards which state exactly what they do not agree with or what they are
protesting. A silent protest is a form of peaceful protest.
T: What different types of protests do you get?
S5: Sit ins?
T: Yes, that is right. Any other types?
S6: Marching, boycotting and striking?
T: Well done these are all types of protests.

Rejected
T: When a boy asks a girl out on a date and the girls says no, the boy has been what by the girl?
S1: Denied?
T: That’s not wrong but try another word. A word that is a little harsher?
S2: Rejected?
T: Well done. Yes, that is the word I am looking for. What tense is “rejected”?
S3: Past tense?
T: Yes, you are correct. More specifically it is a past participle. What is the present tense of
rejected?
S3: Reject?
T: Yes. How many syllables are there in the word Reject?
S3: Two?
