The first ten articles or amendments in the Constitution

1st Amendment

Freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, or the right of individuals to

assemble peacebly or petition the government to respond to grievances

2nd Amendment

Rights to keep and bear arms

3rd Amendment

Restricts the government from housing or quartering soldiers in the homes of private citizens, in

peace or war, without the consent of the owner

4th Amendment

Forbids the search of property or houses of individuals except when probable cause has been

established and a search warrant has been issued

5th Amendment

Guarantess that no person shall be deprived of life, limb, or property without due process of law

and further stipulates that no one can be forced to testify or otherwise incriminate themselves. No

person can be tried twice for the same crime (double jeopardy), but can be tried separately on

criminal and on civil charges.

,6th Amendment

Guarantees the right to a speedy and public trial by an impartial jury. Individuals must be

informed of the charges against them , be able to comfront with the withnesses against them, and

be provided with counsel and be able to call witnesses on their behalf.

7th Amendment

Guarantees the right to a jury trial.

8th Amendment

Bans the use of excessive bails or fines and the use of cruel and unusual punishments.

9th Amendment

Establishes that citizens have rights beyond those stated in the Constitution, and states the

specific listings of certain rights in the Constitution cannot be used to deny or abridge other

rights retained by the people.

10th Amendment

Reserves for the states or the people any powers nor directly delegated to or prohibited by the

federal government. (Reserved powers: the bulk of powers granted to the states)

13th Amendment

Bans slavery and involuntary servitude except as punishment for a crime for which one has been

convicted.

14th Amendment

,First time that the Constitution addresses citizenship stating that "all persons born or naturalized

in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and

the state of wherein they reside." It allows for reapportionment of the seats in the House of

Representatives after a census and counting all persons. It also voids the three-fifths clause.

15th Amendment

The right of U.S. citizens cannot , be denied on account of race, color, or previous condition of

servitude (clearing the way for African American men to vote). This Amendment was fought

against by the Southern States through literacy tests, poll taxes and grandfather clauses (1870).

19th Amendment

Citizens cannot be denied the right to vote based on sex (grants women the right to vote) 1920

24th Amendment

Indicates that poll taxes cannot be used to deny the right to vote to any citizens (makes poll taxes

illegal (1964)).

26th Amendment

Extends the vote to individuals who are eighteen years of age (changes voting age from 21 to

18). (1971)

Amendment Guarantees

Amendment 1-9: specific guarantees of person freedoms

Amendment 10: Reserved to the states all of those powers not specifically withheld or granted to

the federal government (life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, common good, justice, equality, truth,

diversity, popular sovereignty, and patriotism).
