EXCESSIVE GENAI USE AND CRITICAL THINKING



Recent advances in generative AI (GenAI) chatbots have made tasks easier, but they
also raise concerns that people may stop thinking for themselves. Too much
dependence on GenAI can weaken critical thinking. Whhen people rely on AI to do
routine tasks, they stop using their own judgment. Lee et al. explain that automating
“routine tasks” removes chances for people to practise thinking and decision-making,
which causes their mental skills to weaken over time (microsoft.com).



In other words, constantly letting AI do the work can make people’s problem-solving
abilities fade. Secondly, many users trust AI results too much and stop thinking critically.
Humans are “poor judges of their metaknowledge,” meaning they often do not realise
when they are relying too much on AI. Lee et al. also found that higher trust in GenAI is
linked to lower critical thinking (microsoft.com), and Gerlich notes that many people
