, Section 1: Learning Journey Reflection

My journey through AFL1501 has been less about acquiring new information and more about a
fundamental reorientation of my perspective. Initially, my understanding of language, culture, and
identity was monolithic and somewhat simplistic. I saw language as a neutral tool for
communication, a vessel for conveying information that was largely separate from the person using
it. Culture was something I associated with visible, external expressions—food, music, traditional
attire—while identity felt like a static, pre-determined label based on my nationality or first
language. This module systematically deconstructed these notions, replacing them with a dynamic,
interconnected, and deeply personal understanding.

The most profound shift was in my perception of language. AFL1501 moved me beyond the
technicalities of grammar and vocabulary to appreciate language as a worldview. The concept that
each language carves up reality differently, embedding unique cultural values, histories, and ways
of knowing, was revolutionary. I began to see that language is not merely a tool I use, but a force
that shapes my very thoughts and experiences. Learning about the nuances of politeness, respect,
and social hierarchy embedded in different African languages, for instance, made me realise that
direct translation often fails because it cannot carry the cultural context. This understanding
fostered a new sensitivity; I became more patient and attentive in cross-linguistic interactions,
listening not just for words, but for the cultural logic behind them.

This new lens on language naturally reshaped my understanding of culture and identity. I came to
see culture not as a performance for special occasions, but as the invisible software that runs our
daily lives—governing our concepts of time, personal space, humour, and even how we express
emotions. The module’s emphasis on the African linguistic landscape, with its incredible diversity
and the complex dynamics between indigenous and colonial languages, highlighted how culture is a
site of both preservation and negotiation. This led directly to a more nuanced view of my own
identity. I stopped seeing it as a fixed box to check and started viewing it as a tapestry woven from
the threads of my linguistic repertoire, my cultural practices, and my ongoing interactions with
others. I became more aware of my own cultural positionality and how it influences my perceptions
and biases.

Ultimately, AFL1501 has equipped me with a reflective humility. I now approach intercultural
interactions not as a expert, but as a lifelong learner. The ability to appreciate my own linguistic
and cultural background, while simultaneously holding space for the validity and richness of others',
has been the most significant outcome. I no longer see diversity as a challenge to be managed, but
as a resource to be cherished. This learning journey has instilled in me the conviction that true
communication goes beyond mere verbal exchange; it requires a respectful curiosity about the
person behind the words, and an appreciation for the unique cultural and linguistic lens through
which they see the world.
