ASSIGNMENT 5 2025

DUE 3 NOVEMBER 2025

Introduction

Research is not merely a technical exercise or a linear process of data gathering and
analysis, but rather a deeply philosophical and reflexive journey that requires
researchers to interrogate their own assumptions, positionalities, and aims (RSE4801,
Learning Unit 1). As Learning Units 5 and 6 highlight, every research endeavour begins
with a worldview an ontological and epistemological stance that shapes not only what is
studied but also how it is studied. The researcher’s philosophical assumptions therefore
provide the foundation upon which methodological choices are constructed, guiding the
selection of research paradigms, data generation methods, and interpretative
frameworks (RSE4801, Learning Unit 5). Historically, research methodologies have
been dominated by positivism and neo-positivism, which uphold the natural sciences as
the model for rigorous inquiry. This tradition prioritised objectivity, verification, and
evidence-based approaches to knowledge (RSE4801, Learning Unit 6). However, the
emergence of interpretivist, critical, and posthumanist paradigms challenged the
hegemony of positivist thought by recognising that knowledge is socially constructed,
context-dependent, and value-laden. These developments have contributed to a more
pluralistic and flexible understanding of research, where mixed methods and
methodological innovation are embraced as valid means of exploring complex
educational phenomena (RSE4801, Learning Unit 5).
