Question 1 Discuss the major goals of Human Factor Ergonomics (HFE). Use relevant examples to
illustrate your answer
What is Human Factor Ergonomics?
Human factor ergonomics is a science that provides an understanding of the significant role design
plays, when designing a workplace. The manner in which a workplace, workstation is designed
overall affects employee’s performance and allows us to better understand how employees work
both mentally and physically in the workplace, which results in designing the work environment and
systems to maximize employee productivity, safety in the workplace and the overall employee well-
being in the work place.
The role design plays in human factors and ergonomics are never ending, as everyday people are
finding new ways to improve designs in the workplace to better enhance productivity.
The major goals of Human Factor Ergonomics:
The common objectives of Human Factor Ergonomics is to look for ways to constantly implement
changes, make modifications to the workplace and workstation design, resulting in the improvement
of facilities employees use to perform work related duties in the workplace environment.
The major system goals mentioned in A Guide to Human Factor and Ergonomics are the below:
The goal of Safety
The goal of Production
The goal of Operator Satisfaction
The above are common goals distinguished in Ergonomics.
1. The Goal of Safety:
The capability and work duties of an employee should be taken into consideration when
designing the workstation, work equipment and systems. The workplace should be fitted
accordingly to the employee. By analyzing potential operational errors, subjective
assessments and physiological response variables, accidents can be prevented by predicting
safety problems and finding solutions to these problems and prevention methods to avoid
injuries and incidents from taking place. When designing tools and workstations, accidents
and operational errors need to be taken into consideration.
Examples of Safety:
Maintaining the correct posture while being seated at your desk and while picking up stock
and operating equipment can reduce fatigue, eliminate strains and decrease stress on joints.
