1.1 Define the meaning of the term ‘domestication’ (3)
a. Domestication involves the genetic changes being made to the animal species as a whole
through artificial selection or selective breeding.
1.2 List the six criteria necessary for successful domestication of a species. (6)
a. The animal must eat food that is cheap, readily available and not needed by humans.
b. It must grow relatively quickly to reach maturity in a short time.
c. It must breed and thrive in captivity.
d. It must have a predictable, non-aggressive nature so that it does not pose a danger to
man.
e. It must have a calm temperament or a flocking instinct which facilitates handling.
f. It must have a social hierarchy so that it will learn to recognise man as the dominant
“pack leader”.
1.3 List four benefits of animal domestication to humans in modern society. (4)
