QUESTION 1: POETRY Read the poem below, and then answer the questions
that follow. Mother Doesn't Want a Dog – by Judith Viorst Mother doesn't
want a dog. Mother says they smell, And never sit when you say sit, Or even
when you yell. And when you come home late at night And there is ice and
snow, You have to go back out because The dumb dog has to go. Mother
doesn't want a dog. Mother says they shed, And always let the strangers in
And bark at friends instead, And do disgraceful things on rugs, And track
mud on the floor, And flop upon your bed at night And snore their doggy
snore. Mother doesn't want a dog. She's making a mistake. Because, more
than a dog, I think She will not want this snake. 1.1) In the poem, the mother
gives the child many reasons why she does not want a dog. List two reasons
and explain why they might worry an adult more than a child. (3 marks) 1.2)
Younger learners respond well to humorous poems. Pick three lines or
images from this poem and discuss how they contribute to the humour of the
poem. (6 marks) 1.3) In your study guide, we teach you how to take poetry
“off the page” in the classroom. Provide three suggestions for how would you
teach this poem “off the page”? (6 marks) Total for question 1: 15 marks

QUESTION 1: POETRY

Poem: “Mother Doesn’t Want a Dog” by Judith Viorst

, 1.1) In the poem, the mother gives the child many reasons why she does not want a dog.
List two reasons and explain why they might worry an adult more than a child. (3 marks)

Answer:

 The mother says dogs smell and shed hair. These issues worry adults more because they
are responsible for keeping the house clean and maintaining hygiene, while children often
overlook such concerns.
 She also complains that dogs track mud on the floor and do disgraceful things on
rugs. Adults worry about the cost and effort of cleaning or replacing household items, but
children simply see the dog as a fun companion.

(Any two reasons explained clearly = 3 marks)

1.2) Younger learners respond well to humorous poems. Pick three lines or images from
this poem and discuss how they contribute to the humour of the poem. (6 marks)

Answer:

1. “And do disgraceful things on rugs” – This line is humorous because it exaggerates the
dog’s naughty behaviour in a way children find funny. The word “disgraceful” is
something adults say seriously, but in this context, it sounds comically dramatic.
2. “And flop upon your bed at night and snore their doggy snore” – The idea of a dog
snoring in bed like a human is funny and creates a playful mental image that appeals to
children’s imaginations.
3. “Because, more than a dog, I think / She will not want this snake.” – The ending is
unexpected and humorous because the child cleverly plans to get something even worse
(a snake) to make the mother regret saying no to a dog. This twist adds surprise and
laughter.

(3 points × 2 marks each = 6 marks)

1.3) In your study guide, we teach you how to take poetry “off the page” in the classroom.
Provide three suggestions for how you would teach this poem “off the page”. (6 marks)

Answer:

1. Dramatisation:
Have learners act out the poem with one learner playing the “mother” and another as the
“child,” using exaggerated voices and gestures to bring the humour to life.
