How does Swift portray himself throughout the essay? In what places does he reveal an egotistical persona? - P1. He portrays himself as serious, authoritative, stuck-up and superior to all. P2. He is speaking opposite of a modest tone, which is ironic. In the beginning, he sets it up to make the common reader believe that it is going to be a real, modest, proposal but it isn't. How does Swift dehumanize the people in this essay? What is his purpose in doing so? - He calls women breeders. He calls people food. He says that we only need 1 men for every 4 women because men can reproduce faster. He is taking their language and making fun of them with it by using it in a serious way. How does Swift make himself appear to be an expert? - In paragraph 4 he states, "As to my own part, having turned my thoughts for many years, upon this important subject, and maturely weighed the several Schemes of the other Projectors (One who forms schemes or designs), I have always found them to be grossly mistaken in their computations." In paragraph 7 he states, "I am assured by our Merchants, that a Boy or Girl, before twelve years Old, is no saleable Commodity, and even when they come to this Age, they will not yield above three Pounds, or three Pounds and half a Crown at most on the Exchange, which cannot turn to Account either to the Parents or the Kingdom, the Charge of Nutriments and Rags having been at least four times that Value."
