, QUESTION 1: COMPREHENSIVE LIFE SKILLS LESSON PLAN
1. TOPIC AND CONTEXT
Subject: Life Skills
Study area: Personal and Social Well-being
Grade: Grade 4
Lesson duration: 60 minutes
Topic: Bullying and appropriate responses to bullying
Bullying is included under the Grade 4 topic, development of the self, in the
Intermediate Phase Life Skills curriculum. The lesson helps learners identify bullying,
understand its effects and practise safe ways of responding (Department of Basic
Education, 2011, p. 11).
This topic is suitable for Grade 4 learners because they spend more time forming
friendships and working with peers. They may experience teasing, exclusion, threats
or physical bullying. They therefore need practical communication and decision-
making skills that will help them protect themselves and support others. Life Skills
develops self-awareness, problem-solving, interpersonal relations and effective
communication (Department of Basic Education, 2011, p. 10).
2. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, learners should be able to:
1. Define bullying and identify at least three features that separate it from an
ordinary disagreement.
2. Classify four examples of bullying as physical, verbal, social or online bullying.
3. Describe at least three safe responses to bullying.
4. Demonstrate an appropriate response through a short role-play.
5. Identify two trusted adults who can provide help.
These objectives are measurable because learners must define, classify, describe,
demonstrate and identify information. They also align with the Grade 4 curriculum
