Designing an Educational Intervention
Introduction
Education plays a vital role in shaping learners into critical thinkers and problem solvers
who can participate fully in society. However, teaching and learning are rarely free from
challenges. Teachers often encounter issues that hinder effective learning, such as low
learner engagement, lack of resources, or difficulties in understanding abstract
concepts. To ensure successful learning outcomes, teachers must adopt innovative
intervention strategies that address these challenges. This paper presents an
educational intervention designed after identifying a significant challenge faced by a
practicing teacher. The intervention aims to demonstrate creativity, critical thinking, and
a sound understanding of pedagogical principles.
1. Interview with a Teacher
To gain insights into the challenges of subject-specific teaching, I conducted a focused
interview with a high school mathematics teacher who has been teaching for over ten
years. The teacher explained that while mathematics is a core subject, it is often
perceived by learners as difficult, abstract, and irrelevant to their daily lives. According
to the teacher, many learners disengage during lessons, avoid participating in class
discussions, and rely heavily on memorizing procedures rather than understanding
concepts.
The teacher emphasized that although some learners excel in mathematics, a
significant number of students struggle with topics such as algebra, geometry, and
problem-solving. This results in frustration, low performance, and sometimes even a
fear of mathematics. The teacher also expressed that these challenges are exacerbated
