Designing an Educational Intervention to Enhance Learner
Engagement in Grade 10 Mathematics
Introduction
Mathematics remains one of the most challenging subjects for learners
in secondary schools, often due to abstract concepts, low motivation, and
varying levels of prior knowledge. In particular, algebra presents
difficulties for many students because it requires understanding
relationships, manipulating variables, and applying problem-solving
strategies. Learners who struggle often disengage, which can negatively
impact both academic performance and confidence in mathematics.
This narrative documents an educational intervention designed to
address disengagement in Grade 10 algebra lessons. Through a focused
interview with a practicing mathematics teacher, a specific issue was
identified that impedes learning. Based on this insight, an intervention
strategy is proposed that combines gamified learning, collaboration, and
inclusive teaching practices. The purpose of this intervention is to
enhance learner engagement, improve conceptual understanding, and
foster positive attitudes toward mathematics.
