In your own words, describe about the term “steam-driven fire engine”. [2] QUESTION 2 Every
security guard needs to be familiar with the sections of the Fire Brigade Services Act 99 of 1987.
Explain Fire Brigade Services Act 99 of 1987 based on the following sections: 2.1 Section 2 [2]
2.2 Section 10 [2] 2.3 Section 9 [2] 2.4 Section 4 [2] [8]
QUESTION 1
Steam-driven fire engine [2]
A steam-driven fire engine was one of the earliest mechanised firefighting machines, mainly
used in the 19th and early 20th century. It worked by burning coal or wood in a boiler to
produce steam. This steam powered pistons or turbines which in turn drove a water pump. The
engine could then pump a strong stream of water onto a fire continuously. Before this, fire
brigades relied on manual hand pumps or bucket brigades which were slow and less effective.
Importance: It revolutionised firefighting because it allowed firefighters to respond
quicker and control bigger fires in urban areas.
Historical example: Many European and American cities adopted steam fire engines in
the mid-1800s, replacing horse-drawn manual pumps.
QUESTION 2
Fire Brigade Services Act 99 of 1987 [8]
2.1 Section 2 – Fire Brigade Board [2]
Establishes the national Fire Brigade Board.
