In your own words, describe about the term “steam-driven fire engine”.
A steam-driven fire engine was an early type of firefighting machine that used a steam engine
to power the water pump instead of relying on people or horses to pump it by hand.
In simple terms, it was a large fire pump mounted on wheels, with a boiler that produced
steam. The steam engine then drove a piston pump, which forced water through hoses at high
pressure to fight fires. These machines began appearing in the mid-1800s and were a big step
forward because they could deliver a stronger, steadier stream of water than hand-operated
pumps, and they required fewer firefighters to operate.
They were usually horse-drawn to the fire scene, and once the boiler was fired up, the steam
pressure powered the pump. Steam-driven fire engines remained in use until internal
combustion engines replaced them in the early 1900s.
