This essay argues that the use of LLMs can constitute plagiarism, since these systems often reproduce human-authored content without attribution, obscure authorship, and undermine academic integrity. It also suggests strategies universities can adopt to safeguard the credibility of their qualifications in the era of generative artificial intelligence. First, LLMs are trained on vast datasets that contain copyrighted and human-authored works. This raises the risk that their outputs may reproduce material verbatim without appropriate acknowledgment (Cyphert, 2024). Studies have shown that these models sometimes “memorize” portions of their training data and can output copyrighted texts word-for-word when prompted.
