Social Sciences Lessons
Context of the Lesson
During my teaching practice, I had the opportunity to teach a Social
Sciences lesson to a Grade 6 class in a township school. The school
serves learners from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds,
with isiZulu, Sesotho, and English being the dominant languages
spoken. The context of the school is characterised by limited
resources, as learners share textbooks and many come from socially
and economically disadvantaged households. This meant that in
planning and delivering the lesson, I had to consider not only
academic needs but also the social and emotional needs of the
learners.
The topic of the lesson was “Early African Civilisations – Ancient
Egypt”, with a particular focus on the importance of the Nile River
for the development of farming, trade, and settlement. From the
beginning, I wanted inclusivity to be the central focus of my lesson
so that every learner, regardless of ability, language, or background,
could participate meaningfully.
