Question 1
1.1 Five Parameters Defining Wastewater Quality
The quality of wastewater is assessed using several critical parameters that influence
both treatment processes and environmental outcomes. Five key parameters include:
1. Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD):
BOD measures the oxygen required by microorganisms to decompose organic matter
over a standard period (typically five days). High BOD levels signal significant organic
pollution. In treatment, elevated BOD necessitates greater aeration and biological
processing, thereby raising energy consumption and operational costs. Environmentally,
untreated high-BOD wastewater depletes dissolved oxygen in receiving waters, causing
hypoxia, fish mortality, and ecosystem imbalance.
