, 1. Introduction
Employment relations refers to the system of interactions between employers,
employees, and their representatives. It encompasses issues such as conflict
management, employee well-being, union involvement, fairness, and the alignment of
organisational and individual goals. In safety-critical industries such as aviation,
employment relations play a vital role because employee well-being is directly linked to
operational safety.
SkyJet Airlines, the organisation in the case study, is facing numerous challenges in its
employment relations. These include high levels of fatigue and burnout among staff,
biased performance management practices, weak leadership capacity, and strained
relations with unions. At the same time, the organisation is navigating external
pressures such as inflation, new labour laws, and the adoption of automation and
artificial intelligence (AI).
The purpose of this assignment is to critically analyse these challenges from the
perspective of Industrial and Organisational (I-O) Psychology. I-O psychologists are
trained to address workplace problems using evidence-based methods, focusing on
both individual well-being and organisational effectiveness. The assignment will follow
the structure of the assessment questions. First, the organisational gaps and potential
contributions of I-O psychologists will be analysed. Second, interventions will be
outlined. Third, internal and external factors will be identified. Fourth, the concept of
organisational justice will be discussed with case-specific examples. Finally, the role of
shop stewards will be analysed from a psychological perspective.
2. Discussion
2.1 Question 1: Critical analysis of gaps and I-O psychology contributions
SkyJet Airlines is experiencing a combination of structural, psychological, and relational
gaps that undermine both employee well-being and organisational performance. These
