South Africa’s road transport system is the backbone of the country’s economy. It
moves goods and people every day, connecting farms to factories, shops to homes, and
workers to their jobs. Without a well-functioning road transport system, the economy
would struggle to grow and people would find it difficult to go about their daily lives.
According to the TRL3706 study guide, road transport is “the movement of passengers
and freight using vehicles over a prepared surface” and is one of the main modes of
transport that supports both passenger and freight movement.
The road transport system in South Africa is not a single entity but a combination of
different parts that work together. As the study guide explains, the road transport
system “consists basically of four subsystems or elements: infrastructure, vehicles,
traffic control mechanisms and services”. These four elements are closely connected
and must function together efficiently to ensure the safe and effective movement of
