Assignment 3 Semester 2 2025
Unique Number:
Due Date: 8 September 2025
QUESTION 1
1.1 Role and function of an Approved Inspection Authority
An Approved Inspection Authority (AIA) plays an important role in workplace health and
safety. It is an independent body accredited by the Department of Employment and Labour
to carry out specialised inspections using technical knowledge and equipment. The AIA is
responsible for identifying health hazards in the workplace, such as exposure to hazardous
chemicals, dust, noise and other risks. They conduct risk assessments, environmental
monitoring and technical investigations to determine if workplaces comply with occupational
health and safety laws. After inspections, the AIA provides recommendations to employers
on corrective actions to reduce risks and protect workers. They also issue formal reports that
can be used by management and regulators to ensure compliance. In industries such as
textiles, where exposure to cotton dust and dyes is common, the role of an AIA is essential
in preventing occupational diseases and ensuring the wellbeing of workers (Rielander 2020).
