text-based composition

p. 104/7

Surveillance or privacy? A topic which is highly discussed today.

The text: “Worried about your privacy? Wait until the drones arrive.” also deals with
this issue. It is about the different areas in which people are monitored and so their
privacy is being eroded.
The quote: “All these developments are framed by the biggest technology story of the
decade – that our online lives are accessed, monitored and stored by the UK and US
security services.” shows these different areas mentioned in the text. From social
networks like Facebook to drones filming people in the public and summarizes them
in the fact that US and UK intelligence agencies use these areas for collecting data
from people all over the world.
In the following I want to give examples from history and literature of societies that
have excessively monitored their citizens.

From 1933 to 1945 there was the “III.Reich” in Germany. The government, or better
the “Gestapo”, monitored many citizens and saw what they do. And if somebody did
something wrong or in the eyes of the government “wrong” they went into prison or
were killed.
For example when you were against the NS, Hitler or in general the government, and
you said it in the public, you were mostly killed. Because the government could read
your messages you sent to others who believed in the same things and they could
hear what you said when you called someone.
That means that always somebody “on the other side” know what you are doing in
the moment.
In the literature you find these topic for example in the book “1984” from George
Orwell. It tell the story of a society that monitor their citizens.
But not only a single person were monitored also newspapers, books, TV or theaters.
There is a book called “Fahrenheit 451” which tells the story of a society in which it is
forbidden to have and read books. So it is forbidden to think on your own. The
society or the government do it for you. They want a system controlled by the
government.
