, 1. Problem Statement
ComputerWorld’s survey shows information systems managers’ job satisfaction: Very
satisfied 28%, Somewhat satisfied 46%, Neither 12%, Somewhat dissatisfied 10%, Very
dissatisfied 4%. A sample of 500 computer programmers reported: 105, 235, 55, 90, 15. We
test at α = 0.05 whether programmers’ job satisfaction differs from managers’ using a chi-
square goodness-of-fit test.
Expected Frequencies
𝐸Very satisfied = 500 × 0.28 = 140
𝐸Somewhat satisfied = 500 × 0.46 = 230
𝐸Neither satisfied nor dissatisfied = 500 × 0.12 = 60
𝐸Somewhat dissatisfied = 500 × 0.10 = 50
𝐸Very dissatisfied = 500 × 0.04 = 20
Chi-Square Statistic
The formula:
𝜒2 = ∑ 𝐸𝑖(𝑂𝑖 − 𝐸𝑖)2
Very Satisfied:
𝑂 − 𝐸 = 105 − 140 = −35
