Police Minister Senzo Mchunu recently released the crime statistics for the fourth
quarter of the 2023/2024 financial year and the first quarter of the 2024/2025 financial
year. In his address, Minister Mchunu mentioned that the crime statistics tell a sobering
story, reflecting the severity of the challenges we face. “The crime statistics represent
more than just figures on a page; they reflect the lived realities of the citizens, their
fears, their losses, and their hopes for a safer tomorrow. South Africa is confronted with
a crisis that threatens the safety of the communities and undermines the stability of our
nation as contact crimes are wreaking havoc and instilling fear,” he said. He concluded
his statement by saying that the current state of crime is unacceptable and must be
confronted with unwavering resolve and strategic precision. His address revealed that
crime is generally on the rise and that there were 135 ransom demands, 30 extortion-
related kidnappings, and 8 human trafficking cases reported in this period. Gauteng and
KwaZulu-Natal were the provinces with the highest number of these incidents.
