Report on Corporate Citizenship and Sustainable Development Priorities in
South Africa
To: Chief Executive Officer
From: Corporate Citizenship Officer
Date: [Insert Current Date]
Subject: Corporate Citizenship in Support of South Africa’s Sustainable Development
Priorities
Introduction
As a start-up organisation in South Africa, embedding corporate citizenship (CC) into
our strategy is vital to ensure alignment with the country’s development priorities.
Corporate citizenship refers to the role of corporations in advancing citizenship rights
for individuals through their core activities and influence (University of South Africa,
2017). This report critically examines the social case, linking CC to South Africa’s
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the business case, which highlights the
main drivers for adopting CC.
The Social Case for Corporate Citizenship
Sustainable development is defined as development that meets the needs of the
present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
(Brundtland Commission, 1987). In South Africa, achieving sustainable development
is challenged by unemployment, inequality, and environmental pressures (United
Nations, 2023). Corporate organisations can play an active role in addressing these
challenges through targeted initiatives.
