HSY2602 Assessment 1: Slavery, Colonialism, and Digital Disruption

1.1 Slavery: Historical vs. Modern Forms

Slavery means when people are treated like property and are forced to work against
their will. In the past, this was legal. During the transatlantic slave trade (from the 1500s
to the 1800s), European traders took about 12 million Africans by force and sent them
to the Americas to work as slaves. These people were sold like goods, had no rights,
and even their children were born as slaves. Slavery at that time was legal, open, and
often based on race. It was also very important for the economies of Europe and its
colonies.

Modern slavery is different, but it is still very cruel. Today, slavery is illegal everywhere,
but it continues in secret. Modern slavery happens when people are tricked, forced, or
trapped into working. They lose their freedom through lies, violence, or debt. This
includes human trafficking, forced labour, debt bondage, and child marriage. Right now,
about 49 million people live in modern slavery around the world. Victims may be taken
across borders or forced to work on farms, in mines, in homes, or in the sex trade. In
some parts of Africa and Asia, people are still exploited in harsh conditions, such as
debt bondage on farms or children being sold illegally.
