5 Ek het ’n huisie by die see – HA Fagan
I have a cottage at the sea

1 Ek het ’n huisie by die see. Dis nag
I have a cottage at the sea. It’s night
2 Ek hoor aaneen, aaneen die golwe slaan
I keep hearing the waves break
3 teenaan die rots waarop my huisie staan
against the rocks on which my cottage stands
4 met al die oseaan se woeste krag.
with the whole ocean’s fierce might.

5 Ek hoor die winde huil – ’n kreun, ’n klag,
I hear the winds cry – a groan, a moan,
6 soos van verlore siele in hul nood
like lost souls in their need
7 al dwalend, klagend, wat in graf en dood
still wandering, moaning, that in grave and death
8 geen rus kon vind nie, maar nog soek en smag.
could find no rest, but still long for and yearn for.

9 My vuurtjie brand, my kersie gee sy lig.
My fire burns, my candle gives light.
10 Ek hoor dan maar hoe loei die storm daarbuite,
I hear then how the storm rages outside,
11 ek hoor hoe ruk die winde aan my ruite;
I hear how the wind plucks at my windows;
12 hierbinne is dit veilig, warm en dig.
inside here it is safe, warm and protected.

13 Kom nag, kom weer en wind, kom oseaan –
Come night, come weather and wind, come ocean –
14 Dit is die rots waarop my huisie staan.
this is the rock on which my cottage stands.
