Question 1: The link between illegal immigrants and drug
trafficking in South Africa (15 marks)
Illegal immigration and drug trafficking are interrelated
challenges in South Africa, both of which have serious
implications for national security, public health, and social
stability. The porous borders of South Africa make it possible
for people to enter the country without proper
documentation, and these same routes are often exploited for
the smuggling of drugs.
One major link is that undocumented migrants are often
vulnerable due to their lack of legal status and employment
opportunities. This makes them easy targets for recruitment
by criminal syndicates who use them as drug couriers, street-
level dealers, or transporters. In some cases, international
cartels deliberately use illegal migration as a cover for
trafficking operations, blending the movement of people with
the movement of narcotics. Furthermore, organised crime
thrives in this environment, as illegal immigrants who are
desperate for survival may be forced into activities that fuel
drug distribution and gang-related violence.
