, EED2601 Assignment 3
Semester 2 2025
DUE 2 September 2025
Use this document as a guide and for references to answer your assignment
ACTIVITY 1
1.1 Read the extract below and answer the questions that follow:
Climate Change
Over the years we have seen communities being severely affected by the effects of climate change, which has
depleted Africa’s natural resource base over time. Climate change in Africa now poses a real threat that could
potentially reverse the developmental gains achieved by African countries over the years. Most of Africa’s
population is highly vulnerable to climate change effects.
1.1. State any five (5) negative effects of climate change (5)
Loss of biodiversity – Changes in temperature and rainfall patterns disrupt
ecosystems, causing plant and animal species to decline or become extinct.
Increased frequency of extreme weather events – More severe droughts,
floods, storms, and heatwaves damage infrastructure and livelihoods.
Water scarcity – Reduced rainfall and higher evaporation rates lead to shortages
of fresh water for people, agriculture, and industry.
Decline in agricultural productivity – Unpredictable climate patterns reduce
crop yields and threaten food security.
Degradation of natural resources – Soil erosion, deforestation, and
desertification worsen due to prolonged dry spells and unsustainable land use
intensified by climate stress.
