Differentiate between line and staff evaluations and explain why it is necessary to
conduct these evaluations at police stations.

Line evaluations
Conducted by line managers or operational supervisors who directly oversee
policing activities.
They occur on a day-to-day or continuous basis as part of normal supervision.
Focuses on the immediate operational work being performed, such as patrols,
case handling, and crime prevention initiatives.
Objective is to ensure operational efficiency, adherence to orders, and correct
execution of duties.
Example: A shift commander reviewing the previous shift’s occurrence book and
patrol logs.
Staff evaluations
Conducted by specialised staff officers from supporting divisions such as
inspectorates, compliance units, or provincial/national evaluation teams.
Usually scheduled periodically (monthly, quarterly, annually).
Concentrates on policy compliance, strategic goals, administrative
procedures, and organisational performance against set targets.
More formal, with written reports submitted to higher authorities.
