, QUESTION 1

Seven Broad Types of Values in Policing

1. Universal Values

Universal values are values that are widely accepted and agreed upon across
cultures and societies. They are generally seen as fundamental to human dignity and
peaceful coexistence. Examples include the sacredness of human life, respect for
human dignity, and the promotion of peace. In policing, valuing human life means
ensuring that all actions taken preserve life where possible, such as using minimum
force when handling dangerous situations. These values are not limited to an
individual’s personal appreciation of life but are recognised as applying to everyone.

2. Instrumental Values

Instrumental values are those that are important because they help in achieving
something else. They are tools or means to an end. For instance, freedom can
enable individuals to achieve dignity and self-actualisation, while knowledge can lead
to economic development and better decision-making. For police officials,
instrumental values could include acquiring investigative skills (which aid in solving
crimes) or building community trust (which enables effective crime prevention).

3. Intrinsic Values

Intrinsic values are valued for their own sake, not because of what they lead to or
because others approve of them. They have inherent importance due to their
essential meaning. Examples include beauty, artistic expression, contentment, or
happiness. In policing, intrinsic values might be reflected in the satisfaction derived
from serving the community or in appreciating fairness and justice as worthy ends in
themselves, independent of material gain.
