Scenario 1

Question 1.1: Identify and briefly explain two psychological factors that may have
influenced the employee's decision to leave the organisation.

(6 marks)

Two psychological factors likely influencing the employee’s resignation are:

1. Perceived Absence of Supervisory Support
When employees feel that their supervisors do not value or assist them, it
negatively affects their work morale and emotional well-being. Supervisory
support includes both help with job tasks and emotional encouragement.
According to Eisenberger et al. (2020), a lack of supportive leadership increases
feelings of isolation and detachment from the organisation. In this case, the
employee’s feedback clearly indicated a sense of neglect from management,
which likely weakened her organisational loyalty and contributed to her
departure.
2. Burnout and Long-Term Work-Related Stress
Burnout refers to the emotional and physical exhaustion caused by extended job-
related stress. It typically presents as emotional fatigue, detachment from one’s
role, and decreased job satisfaction (Maslach & Leiter, 2016). Despite having
positive relationships with her team, the employee described experiencing mental
and emotional strain. These are classic signs of burnout and suggest that the
overwhelming nature of her responsibilities pushed her to leave in order to
protect her mental health.
