Assignment 3 2026
Unique number:
Due Date: 30 July 2026
QUESTION 1
Quadrant A: Low demand and strong context
Quadrant A has simple thinking demands because learners use daily language while the
situation gives many clues, such as facial expressions, gestures and shared objects
(Cummins, 1981). In multilingual South African classrooms, this supports confidence
because learners can use English, home languages and body language while they build
basic social understanding (Cummins, 2000). A useful example is learners greeting each
other and discussing weekend activities while the teacher allows code switching to help
meaning.

QUESTION 1
Quadrant A: Low demand and strong context
Quadrant A has simple thinking demands because learners use daily language while
the situation gives many clues, such as facial expressions, gestures and shared
objects (Cummins, 1981). In multilingual South African classrooms, this supports
confidence because learners can use English, home languages and body language
while they build basic social understanding (Cummins, 2000). A useful example is
learners greeting each other and discussing weekend activities while the teacher
allows code switching to help meaning.
Quadrant B: High demand and strong context
Quadrant B becomes harder because learners must think, solve problems and follow
steps, yet pictures, demonstrations and practical materials still support meaning
(Cummins, 1981). This is very useful in South African classrooms because
multilingual learners can engage with challenging content before they have fully
mastered academic English (Gibbons, 2015). For example, Grade 5 learners can
bake bread while reading a recipe, watching a demonstration and learning words
such as mixture, yeast and rise through action.
Quadrant C: High demand and weak context
Quadrant C is the most difficult area because learners must understand abstract
academic ideas with very little help from the immediate situation (Cummins, 2000). In
multilingual classrooms, this can exclude learners when teachers expect them to
read difficult texts without vocabulary support, discussion or examples (Gibbons,
2015). A classroom example is asking learners to read an article about how yeast
affects bread without pictures, pre taught vocabulary or teacher explanation.
Quadrant D: Low demand and weak context
Quadrant D has low thinking demand, but it gives limited contextual support because
meaning depends mainly on language alone (Cummins, 1981). This can still be
challenging for multilingual learners because simple social talk may become unclear
