1.1 The Significance of Collaborative Learning in Foundation Phase Classrooms
Collaborative learning holds particular importance in foundation phase classrooms
because it aligns with Vygotsky’s theory of social constructivism, which states that
learning is constructed through interaction with others (Vygotsky, 1978). At this early
stage of development, children benefit cognitively, socially, and emotionally from
working with peers.
When learners engage in shared activities such as storytelling, they negotiate meaning,
build vocabulary, and refine language skills. For example, discussing a story’s plot
enables them to process and articulate ideas more effectively. Socially, collaboration
promotes empathy, listening, and turn-taking, while emotionally it fosters confidence
and a sense of inclusion.
This method is especially beneficial for diverse classrooms, where learners bring varied
experiences. Collaborative learning allows all learners to contribute, drawing on each
other’s strengths. According to Johnson and Johnson (1999), cooperative learning
enhances problem-solving skills and self-esteem. Therefore, collaborative learning is
not just a teaching strategy but a fundamental element of holistic child development.
